What is a slipmat?
What material is a slipmat made of?
A slipmat is available in different materials. The most common materials used are;
- Felt (standard)
- Cork
- Rubber
- Rubber cork
In addition, there are various materials that (rarely) occur, such as acrylic, leather and glass. Each type of material has its own advantages and disadvantages.
Felt
Is the most common material and is offered in different thicknesses, depending on the 'purpose'. For example, scratch DJs like it if the mat is thinner and harder (pressed) so that the needle stays in place better. Others prefer a thicker mat so that the arm lies horizontally, thus improving the quality of the sound.
In addition, felt slip mats are ideal because they are relatively price-friendly, they dampen static signals well, and they have a smooth structure that allows them to glide well over the record player. In addition, it is ideal for printing in color.
Felt slip mats are ideal for both DJs and listeners.

Cork , rubber , and rubber cork
These materials are ideal for increasing sound quality. This is because it reduces vibrations and static electricity. So there is less 'noise'. You can compare this with damping material in a floor. Polyester/felt, cork and rubber cork are often used here to reduce the sound of footsteps, for example.
These materials are less suitable for DJs.
Because it is a rough material, the LP 'sticks' to the slipmat, as it were. This means you can hardly move the LP (e.g. scratching).
